Most parents want the best for their children, but when it comes to arranging custody, it can be difficult to accept that sometimes that means relinquishing some of one’s time with their child to the other parent. In Arizona, a lot of children of divorced parents grow up in the care of just one or the other of their parents, as is the case in many states. However, recent statistics suggest that shared custody is growing in prevalence in America.

A study carried out by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison examined data going back to 1986. Back then, 80 percent of divorce cases in Wisconsin in which child custody was a factor saw mothers receive sole custody, while only 7 percent resulted in a shared custody arrangement. The shared custody percentage doubled by 1994, while the figure for custody granted solely to mothers dropped to 74 percent.

By 2008, the percentage of cases in which the mother received sole custody had plummeted to 42 percent. Joint custody figures also continued to rise, with 27 percent of cases resulting in equal shared custody and 18 percent in unequal shared custody in 2008.

In contrast, figures for sole custody granted to fathers did not show a marked change, although they dropped slightly from 1988 to 2008.

Many may find the study’s results to be somewhat heartening. Generally speaking, if both parents are willing and suitable parents, a child is likely to benefit from having a relationship with both.

Every child custody case is different, however, and Arizona law aims to ensure that custody arrangements are reached that take the child's best interests into account. If you have any concerns about the custody of your children, you might find an attorney's guidance helpful. It can be difficult to remain impartial where your children are concerned. However, an attorney may be able to assist you in calmly pursuing a fair custody arrangement.
