Divorce can be an emotionally draining and tense event for many couples. Visceral reactions to financial decisions may cause a relatively easy divorce case to be delayed by weeks or months. This could cause the legal and other fees attendant to a divorce to skyrocket. This does not always have to be the case, however.

As many family law attorneys handling divorces base their fees on the amount of time spent on each matter, it may cost less to simply pay for a minor expense such as Internet for the kids as opposed to angling for a minor victory. Another way to keep costs down is to be prepared. Those who have financial records handy can save time and money as the attorney will have less work to do tracking down and verifying an individual's financial situation.

One option that may be available for couples going through a divorce is to use a mediator. Mediators often charge less than what a lawyer would charge, and couples who are in agreement about their financial position may be able to settle their divorce on their own terms with only the mediator's guidance.

Couples who are going through a marital dissolution are often going through a stressful event, especially where there are issues such as child custody involved. However, an attorney may be able to help resolve the case as quickly as possible while obtaining a settlement that benefits both sides. If a couple has children, settling the case quickly may allow them to adjust to the divorce faster. In any divorce case involving parents of young children, the top priority is ensuring that the best interest of a child are met.
