When the topic of paternity comes up, many people think of stories like the one described by The Temptations in their classic soul tune "Papa Was a Rolling Stone." In reality, the legal aspects of establishing paternity are something that affect a wide variety of families for many different reasons.

Our Approach

At Centuori & Associates, PC, our lawyers represent clients in family law and paternity issues exclusively. We will take the time to discuss your situation and go over the options available to you. If necessary, we will get the legal process started.

Legally Recognized Fatherhood

A common misconception is that paternity can be proven by putting the father's name on the birth certificate. Although this may be evidence of intended paternity, this is not true. If an unmarried couple has a child, then additional steps must be taken to legally establish paternity. Until there is an order of the court stating that a specific man is the father of a child, paternity is not established.

Reasons for Establishing Paternity

Paternity is the legal proof of a child's parentage. Establishing paternity provides the father both legal rights and obligations. Without it, a father has no legal grounds to establish child custody or visitation. Without the establishment of paternity, the mother is automatically granted sole custody of the children until paternity is legally established and the custodial status is changed.

With the establishment of paternity, a father (or mother) may be obligated to pay child support to the other parent. In addition, after paternity has been confirmed, the court may enter orders for parenting time and child custody.
