In 1965, three musicians from a backup band that had been working with the O'Jays found themselves stranded in Arizona. In an attempt to try and raise enough money to get back home, these musicians connected with another group and formed a band called Dyke and the Blazers. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise because the band was soon discovered by a Tucson producer who arranged for the release of its first hit "Funky Broadway."

Most people going through a divorce can relate to the feeling of being stranded in a strange place. Much like the musicians who formed Dyke and the Blazers, one of the first questions you may find yourself trying to answer is this — what or who do I have to rely on?

Forms of Spousal Support

For many people spousal support, also known as alimony, is the resource that helps them get back on their feet. There are two primary forms of spousal support:

  • Rehabilitative support A temporary form of support designed to help an individual get the education, training or experience he or she needs to become gainfully employed.
  • Maintenance The traditional long-term spousal support geared toward helping to cover an individual's expenses indefinitely.

While support has traditionally been awarded to the woman in the relationship, it is becoming more and more common for the court to award maintenance to men. The laws are here to help everyone. There are many factors that the court considers in making a determination as to whether spousal maintenance is appropriate or necessary. If you have questions, we encourage you to contact us to discuss them.
