Talking to kids about divorce: Tips for parents

Once a couple has decided to end their marriage, the next step involves talking to close family members about the upcoming change. For parents, this can be a difficult step, as many kids will struggle with the news that their parents are planning to divorce. When having this difficult conversation, Arizona parents should follow some basic guidelines intended to ease the process for their children.

It is important that both parents participate in the early discussions involving divorce. By demonstrating a united front, parents can be there to answer any questions that kids may have, and to express that just because they are not going to move forward as a married couple, the bond between a parent and child lasts forever. Standing together at this difficult time also plays a role in initiating the co-parenting process, whereby divorced parent will need to work together to address a wide range of issues in the years to come.

It is also important to avoid shying away from the word "divorce" when discussing the matter with one's children. Kids often want to believe that their parents might find a way to stay together, and will latch on to even the smallest possibility that the family could remain intact. By being clear about the intention to divorce, kids are given a better chance at accepting the reality of the situation and moving forward.

For those in Arizona who are preparing to have this difficult discussion with their kids, preparation is key. When parents have already come to terms with the decision to divorce, it becomes easier to discuss the matter with their shared children. By working together to tell children about the coming change in family structure, and being available to listen to questions and concerns, parents can go a long way toward easing the transition for all involved.
