What to expect from a $99 divorce

When contemplating the end of a marriage, one of the most important considerations for many Arizona spouses is cost. This is an understandable concern, as virtually everyone is aware of at least one couple who went through a terrible divorce that cost a great deal of money. The desire to save money during this tumultuous time gives companies excellent motivation to offer services aimed at reducing the cost of divorce. One of the most recent examples comes from a company that promises users the ability to move beyond a broken marriage for only $99.

The service begins with a set of questions that prospective clients answer in order to determine if the online company can offer a good fit for a couple’s needs. Once this step is complete, the system generates a package of documents that can be used to file for divorce. The service claims to make every effort to eliminate legal jargon that can be confusing to a layperson, thereby giving people the ability to complete their own divorce paperwork.

The service does not appear to offer individual consultations with an attorney on any matters related to a divorce. This means that spouses are left on their own to weigh the various pros and cons of different property division choices. It also means that there would be no legal professional to oversee the process, and to ensure that an individual’s rights and interests are being looked after. If one spouse is more savvy than the other in terms of finances, there seems to be no protections offered to ensure that the final settlement is fair and balanced.

As is the case for so many offers, this approach sounds too good to be true, and most likely is. When it comes to the legal process of ending a marriage, there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all solution. Each and every couple has a unique blend of assets and debt that must be divided, not to mention the intricacies of child custody negotiations. While a $99 divorce sounds like an appealing option, the vast majority of Arizona couples require a greater level of attention than what can be provided by a divorce paperwork package that is generated by a template.
