Before remarrying your ex, think about the future

Divorce is not an easy process, and yours may have been emotional and painful, especially if you still had feelings for your spouse when the court finalized your split. Whether you always hoped you would get back together or were surprised by the sudden reunion, remarriage is in your future. With your history, however, it may be smart to look realistically at your situation. Remarriages do not have good track records, and you already know what you are getting into.

This is not to discourage you from taking this important step to renew your relationship with your former spouse. However, it is wise to take a critical look at the situation and determine if there are ways you can be proactive about protecting your future.

The odds are against you

While you may have high hopes about your reunion, statistics tell a sad story. About 60% of remarriages end in divorce, and remarried couples divorce sooner than couples on their first marriages. Nevertheless, you may have solid reasons for wanting to remarry your spouse. Some common reasons why divorced couples reunite include the following:

  • They realize the divorce was a mistake.
  • They have gone through some personal growth or maturity since the divorce.
  • They did not find the satisfaction they expected to have as single people.
  • They still love each other.
  • The factors that resulted in the marital conflict are now water under the bridge.
  • They jumped into divorce too quickly instead of working to resolve their issues.

Whatever your personal history, you and your ex will certainly want to take advantage of marriage counseling and other opportunities to face the reality of your relationship. It will be critical to uncover any lingering issues that may be a threat to your new union.

See past your emotions

No matter how empty and lonely your life may be since your divorce, it is important to look beyond your emotions to the practical matters. Your divorce may have set you back financially, perhaps jeopardized your business or practice, and may have depleted your savings or retirement funds. You cannot risk this a second time.

Before you make any decisions about remarrying your ex, you would be wise to reach out for unbiased advice from an Arizona legal professional. This may include drafting a prenuptial agreement or taking other precautions to ensure you have protection in the event your second marriage comes to an unhappy end.
